SAUGET, IL - Gateway starting pitcher Corey Davisson threw seven strong innings and his offense gave him plenty of support in a 7-2 Grizzlies win Saturday night against the Florence Freedom at GCS Ballpark.
A crowd of 4,528 saw Davisson (2-3) go seven innings for the first time this season, surrendering just one run on six hits and earning his second straight win.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. O'Fallon, MO native Kent Gerst homered for the fourth time in seven games for Gateway.
Gateway (20-29) added to their lead in the fifth with another homer. This time designated hitter Nick Farnsworth went deep in his second game with the team.
Florence (24-25) recorded three hits in the sixth, but only managed one run on a Drew Rundle RBI single to make the score 2-1 in favor of Gateway.
The Grizzlies extended their lead to six runs with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a Charlie Lisk two-run double.
The Grizzlies and Freedom conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. Ryan Juarez (0-1) gets the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 3:05.
