Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Miners lost their second straight game to River City, 9-5, Saturday evening at Rent One Park. Zach Robertson was very effective, working six scoreless innings en route to the win. Miners righty Ryan Zink allowed eight runs off nine hits and took the loss. The Rascals scored three in the first inning and three more in the third inning to put the Miners behind the eight-ball early once again.
The Rascals scored in five of the first six innings to take a 9-0 lead. After Chris McClendon drew a walk to lead off the game, Chad Maddox drove him and Stephen Holdren in on the left fielder's two-run triple. Maddox then crossed the plate on Joash Brodin's RBI groundout immediately following, handing River City a 3-0 lead before the Miners bats reached the plate.
The Rascals put up another three-spot in the third off Miners starter Ryan Zink as River City struck for three extra-base hits. Maddox added to his impressive day with another run scoring extra-base hit to plate Holdren. Jason Patton drove in his first of three runs in the third on a single. He smashed a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the fifth inning to boost their lead to 9-0.
The Miners finally came through with clutch hits in the late innings. Southern Illinois delivered three consecutive two-out RBI hits to score four runs in the seventh. The inning was highlighted by a Nate Hall two-run triple, cutting the Miners deficit to 9-4. Sean Harrell delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to cut it to 9-5. Harrell recorded three hits and also scored a run.
Rascals starter, Zach Robertson was efficient as he worked six scoreless innings. The lefty allowed no runs off seven hits, and struck out five while walking just two Miners hitters. With the victory, Robertson moved his impressive record to 5-0 on the season.
Miners all-star Ryan Zink allowed nine runs off eight hits, in five innings against his former team and took his third loss of the year.
Eric Suttle struck for three hits in the game. Southern Illinois had 12 hits, but stranded 11 runners.
With the loss, the second place Miners fell four games out of first place, the furthest the team has been out of first place since 2008.
Sunday the Rascals look for the sweep against Miners all-star David Harden (5-1, 2.31) for a 5:05 p.m. first pitch from Rent One Park. The West Division All-Star starting pitcher Zach Sterner (6-1, 2.24) will start for River City. It will be Metropolis Community Day on a Family Fun Sunday.
