Reading Fightin Phils News Release

READING, Pa.----Second baseman Albert Cartwright tripled and was driven home by an Edgar Duran single as the Reading Fightin Phils (7-5) edged the Harrisburg Senators (7-6), 4-3, in the team's first extra-innings victory of 2013.

But it was top prospect Jesse Biddle who dominated talk for most of the game. After punching out five batters and giving up four hits through three innings, the southpaw didn't allow a base hit through the remainder of his seven inning outing. The only base runners that Biddle allowed following the third frame were three walks; one to Destin Hood in the sixth inning and back-to-back four-pitch walks to Sandy Leon and Rick Hague in the seventh. After he issued his final walk, Biddle exited the game in favor of reliever J.C. Ramirez.

The Philadelphia native finished with eight strikeouts and 91 pitches, 52 of which were strikes.

Biddle's start was supported by a Reading offensive effort that never let Harrisburg gain the lead. Reading got on the board in the first inning after Zach Collier singled and stole second with two outs in the first. Collier was driven home by the red-hot Jim Murphy, who saw his nine-game hitting streak broken in yesterday's shutout.

Harrisburg tied the game on a Sandy Leon RBI single in the second inning, but the Fightins pulled away in the next frame when Cartwright scored his first run of the game after Collier hit into a 3-6 double play. Catcher Cameron Rupp increased the lead later in the sixth inning when he hit a solo home run to left field.

In relief, Ramirez struck out three batters in two perfect innings. In seven innings across four appearances, the former Seattle prospect has yet to allow a run.

Closer Kyle Simon entered the game in the ninth inning and was on pace for his fourth save in as many games, but he blew his first save of the season upon surrendering a two-run homer to Harrisburg catcher Sandy Leon.

After a scoreless for the ninth for the Fightins, Hector Neris struck out one and walked one in a scoreless tenth inning. His effective appearance gave way to Cartwright and Duran's late-game heroics.

Cartwright, who has hits in seven straight games, was 3-for-4 to extend his batting average to .354 in 12 games. Duran, Collier, and Anthony Hewitt also had multi-hit games with two hits apiece.

The Fightins have the day off on Wednesday before embarking on a seven-game road trip to Richmond and Harrisburg. RHP Seth Rosin gets the start on Thursday for the Fightin Phils. Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann starting at 6:05 p.m.

The Fightin Phils continue their 47th season affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, April 26 when the team takes on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the 2013 season can be purchased online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or in-person by visiting the FirstEnergy Stadium Ticket Office.
