Manchester Monarchs News Release
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the primary affiliate of the Manchester Monarchs, have assigned goaltender Jonathan Bernier and forward Kevin Westgarth to the Monarchs, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Forward Brad Richardson has also returned to the Kings after his conditioning assignment in Manchester.
Bernier, 20, was with the Kings during their recently concluded road trip, but did not appear in a game. The 6-foot, 185-pounder from Laval, Quebec, has appeared in 25 games with the Monarchs this season, posting a 10-12-3 record with one shutout, a 2.79 goals-against-average and .897 save percentage.
The Kings selected Bernier in the first-round (11th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, and he played in four games with the Kings during the 2007-08 season. Bernier, who won his NHL/Kings debut by backstopping the Kings to a victory vs. the Ducks in London, England, on Sept. 29, 2007, has a career record of 1-3-0, a goals-against-average of 4.03 and a save percentage of .864 in his four career NHL/Kings appearances. In addition, Bernier won a gold medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Westgarth, 24, played in the last two Kings games (including his NHL debut Tuesday in Minnesota), recording zero points and zero penalty minutes. In 37 games with Manchester this season, he's recorded five points (1-4=5) and 104 penalty minutes. His 104 penalty minutes rank second on the Monarchs and 25th in the AHL. Westgarth had 12 points (6-6=12) and 191 penalty minutes for Manchester last season. His 191 penalty minutes ranked second on Manchester and second among AHL rookies. The 6-foot-5, 241-pounder from Amherstburg, Ontario, signed with the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on March 16, 2007, and finished the 2006-07 campaign with the Monarchs, posting three points (1-2=3) and 24 penalty minutes in 14 games.
Richardson, 23, played in three games during his conditioning assignment and recorded three points (1-2=3) and zero penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 184-pound native of Belleville, Ontario, has played in nine games with the Kings this season, recording one point (an assist) and seven penalty minutes. He suffered a foot injury during practice on December 3 and has missed the last 22 Kings games due to the injury. Richardson is in his first season with the Kings after being acquired from Colorado on June 21. He has played in 145 career NHL regular season games with the Kings and Avalanche, recording 41 points (19-22=41) and 55 penalty minutes.
The Monarchs continue their five game road trip with game three at the Wachovia Spectrum with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday, January 23.
