Berkhoel Wins MVP
January 18, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Boise, ID- The American Conference defeated the National Conference 6-3 in last night's 2007 ECHL All Star Game in Boise, Idaho, thanks in large part to Bombers goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who was honored as this years MVP.
Berkhoel was elected to start for the American Conference in goal and played the entire first period before being relieved by Cedrick Desjardins (Cincinnati) and Kevin Shantz (Florida) in the second and third periods. Berkhoel stopped 10 of 11 shots against for the American Conference and had it not been for a goal by his former teammate Derrick Nesbitt (Alaska), he would have shut out the National Conference in the first period.
The American Conference continued to dominate by taking a 4-1 lead in the second period on goals by Kevin Baker (Texas), Colton Fretter (Gwinnett) and Ken Magowan (Toledo), all of which were scored on Stockton Thunder rookie netminder Devan Dubnyk.
With a 4-1 lead after two periods, it looked like the American Conference was going to walk away with this one, but the National Conference did not go down so easily. Last year's MVP Luke Curtin of the Fresno Falcons cut the lead to two very early in the third. Julian Talbot of the Alaska Aces trimmed it down to one moments later, but John Laliberte (Trenton) and Jamie Tardiff (Toledo) sealed the deal late in the third allowing the American Conference to cruise to a 6-3 victory.
Although the American Conference won the game as a team, what should not be overlooked is the fact that the North Division had each one of its representatives play a huge role in the victory. Each forward recorded at least one point and both Berkhoel and Desjardins combined for 19/20 saves (Berkhoel 10/11, Desjardins 9/9).
Adam Berkhoel also displayed his outstanding talent on an individual basis the previous night, Tuesday, January 16, in the All Star Skills Competition. Berkhoel stopped all six National Conference skaters in the breakaway relay and made it look very easy in the process, calmly knocking aside all the attempts.
