Berkhoel Shuts Out Titans As Bombers Win 1-0
April 16, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH-The Dayton Bombers took a two game lead at the EJ Nutter Center on Monday night by defeating the Trenton Titans (New Jersey Devils "AA") 1-0.
The Bombers were fresh off a 6-3 victory over the Titans in game one of this best-of-five series. The Titans were not going to let the Bombers get out to a great start like they did last night. In last nights' game the Bombers went 3 for 4 on the power play in the first period. Tonight the Titans made the needed adjustments and held the Bombers 0-for-4. Titans' goaltender Joel Martin (29 saves, loss) stopped all 12 of Dayton's shots. The big story in the first period happened at the 10:07 mark when Bombers' forward Matt Herneisen suffered an injury at the hands of Titans' forward Pierre-Luc LeBlonde, who was given a five minute charging major and 10 minute game misconduct for charging. Herneisen's helmet flew off as his head smashed into the glass and was very slow to get to his feet even with the help of Dayton's medical staff.
The second period remained quiet until the Bombers went on the power play 14:07 into the second. Captain Greg Labenski took a shot from the point, Martin left a rebound and Yannick Tifu (2) smashed the puck home. In the first 40 minutes there were already 21 penalties. The Bombers were only 1 for 11 on the power play; the Titans 0 for 7.
Tifu's goal was all goaltender Adam Berkhoel (14 saves, win) needed for the victory stopping everything Trenton threw at him. The Bombers held on for the 1-0 win and now have a two game lead in the series.
The Bombers and Titans play again Thursday, April 19 in Trenton. You can tune into the broadcast through www.daytonbombers.com and B2 networks. The Bombers could return to the EJ Nutter Center on Sunday, April 22 at 5:00 for a game five if necessary.
