West Michigan takes season series

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan offense struggled severely for the third time in the last five game days and managed just three hits in a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Beloit.

Last Friday, the Whitecaps managed just two hits but beat the Snappers. On Saturday, West Michigan came up with only one hit in a shutout loss. Whitecaps defenders committed three errors Tuesday, leading to four unearned runs. Beloit built a 3-0 lead on four singles in the third inning. Landon Burt drove in the first run. Two batters later, Deacon Burns picked up a pair of RBI on a hit up the middle off West Michigan starter Andrew Kown.

In the fifth, two balls went off the glove of centerfielder Clete Thomas. The first was scored a double for Steve Tolleson. Later in the inning, Jeremy Pickrel drove a ball to left center that went as a three-base error and allowed two runs to score for a 5-0 Snappers lead. An error by third baseman Wilkin Ramirez kept the door open for Beloit in the seventh as the Snappers added another pair runs. The first run in the seventh came on a double by David Winfree. It was the only RBI for Winfree during the eight game stretch against the Whitecaps, dating back to last Tuesday. Winfree entered the series in Beloit with a league leading total of 84 RBI, but over the last week was held in check by West Michigan pitchers and relinquished the league lead to Ryan Harvey of Peoria.

The only Whitecaps run of the game came on a double by Jeff Frazier in the eighth inning. Clete Thomas scored on the play following a one-out single.

Lavon Lewis threw a scoreless sixth inning in relief for West Michigan and retired the side on only four pitches. Kevin Ardoin was perfect on the mound in the eighth and ninth. Beloit starter Eddie Morlan allowed just one hit in six innings to earn the win. David Shinskie struck out the side in order in the ninth to close out the victory for the Snappers.

The Majority: West Michigan wins the season series against the Snappers, 5-3.
