Gallagher picks up 13th win
Clinton, IA - Luis Rivera picked up four hits and two RBI while Eric Patterson homered and the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Clinton LumberKings 8-3 Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field. With the win the Chiefs finished their six game road trip 4-2 and move to 22-24 on the second half.
Clinton jumped on Chiefs starter Sean Gallagher for a pair or rare 1st inning runs. After a strikeout to start the inning, Casey Benjamin struck his third homer of the season, a solo shot to left for a 1-0 Clinton lead. Brandon Boggs followed with a double to left and after a flyout he scored on a single to right off the bat of Jim Fasano.
The Chiefs left a runner at third in the 2nd inning before striking in the 3rd against Michael Schlact. With one out, Luis Rivera bounced a single up the middle and stole second. After a groundout, Aaron Smith doubled to left to bring Rivera home. Eric Patterson gave the Chiefs a 3-2 lead with a two-run opposite field homer, his 11th of the season.
Anthony Granato led off the Chiefs 5th inning with a triple to right center. He came home on a basehit by Luis Rivera for a 4-2 Chiefs lead. The RBI was Rivera's second in a Chiefs uniform. In the 7th, Granato reached on a two-out infield single before Rivera singled to right for his third hit of the game. Sam Fuld ended Schlact's night with a double off the right field wall to score both runners for a 6-2 Peoria lead.
The Chiefs put the game away in the 8th inning with a pair of unearned runs. Patterson led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. After two outs, Joe Simokaitis reached on a dropped third strike and went to third on a single by Oscar Bernard. Granato walked to load the bases and Rivera singled for the fourth time in the game as Simokaitis scored for an 8-2 Chiefs lead.
Gallagher is now tied for 1st in the MWL with 13 wins after throwing 83 pitches in five innings. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five. His MWL leading ERA is now 2.29 and Gallagher is top five in innings pitched (129 2/3), strikeouts (120) and wins (13). Michael Phelps allowed just two baserunners while striking out four in his three innings of work.

Luis Rivera (3B) - The Chiefs third baseman, making just his fourth start, went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, a stolen base and two RBI. Rivera singled, stole second and scored in the 3rd, drove home a run with a single in the 5th, singled and scored in the 7th and singled in a run in the 8th. He raised his average from .091 to .333.
Notes... The four hit game was the first of Rivera's career...Granato was 2-for-3 and has hit safely in each of his last nine starts...Harvey had the day off with a tight hamstring, the first game he has missed since July 2nd...Jesse Schmidt also got a day off, his first since July 15th...The Chiefs have the day off on Wednesday before beginning a four game homestand against Quad Cities Thursday at 7:00 PM.
