Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - Myron Leslie's two run double in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Travis Buck and Eddie Kim and gave the Kane County Cougars an 11-10 victory, their second in stunning fashion in as many nights. The resulting sweep of the four game series against Dayton was also their first of the season.
Early on it looked as though it would a one sided affair as the Cougars used the long ball to power their way to an 8-0 advantage. Travis Buck cleared the bases in the first with his first professional grand slam driving in Cliff Pennington, Luis Perez and Tommy Everidge. A three run shot by Ryan Ruiz in the fourth and an RBI single later in the inning from Everidge made it 8-0. The Dragons then used some muscle of their own as Evan Conley connected for a three run blast in the fifth to make it 8-3. The Dragons would draw closer when Tonys Gutierrez connected for a pair of runs with a single and it was 8-5. Dayton wasn't finished as they added three more markers in the sixth before Trevor Lawhorn's home run in the eighth gave them a 10-8 advantage.
Almost as scripted, the Cougars would rally to within one when Ruiz scored on an infield out in the eighth setting the stage for Leslie's ninth inning heroics, his game winning hit kicking up chalk on the right field foul line as it skidded into the corner allowing both runners to score.
Derek Tharpe notched the win, his second of the season while James Morrison absorbed the loss, his fifth without a victory. The win moves Kane County one-half game ahead of Burlington in the race for the division's final playoff spot. Following an off day on Wednesday, the Cougars will travel to Cedar Rapids to begin a four game series against the Kernels on Thursday. The Cougars will then return to Geneva on Monday, August to open an eight game homestand with four contests vs West Michigan and four with division foe Beloit.
