Chiefs Use Long Ball to Defeat LumberKings

Clinton, IA - Ryan Harvey homered and drove in four runs and Aaron Smith homered as well to lead the Peoria Chiefs over the Clinton LumberKings 10-5 Monday night. With the four RBI, Harvey takes over the Midwest League lead in RBI with 86, two more than Beloit's David Winfree.

The Chiefs got on the board against Clinton starter Kyle Rogers in the 2nd inning after an error and a homer. Jesse Schmidt started the inning with a grounder to second that was booted and then thrown away by Tug Hulett. Two batters later, Aaron Smith homered to left to give the Chiefs their first lead of the series in 20 innings played. The homer was Smith's 3rd of the season.

One inning later, the Chiefs battered Rogers again. Sam Fuld reached with a one-out infield single and went to third on a chop single to right from Eric Patterson. Patterson stole second and both runners scored on Ryan Harvey's homer to straight away center field. The homer, Harvey's Midwest League leading 21st, gave the Chiefs a 5-0 lead.

Clinton scratched a run across the plate against Chiefs starter Jesse Estrada in the 4th. With two outs, Estrada walked Jim Fasano before allowing a single up the middle to Billy Susdorf. Ian Gac put the LumberKings on the board with a single to left that scored Fasano from second base.

The LumberKings closed the gap in the 5th inning. Tug Hulett led off with a single and Casey Benjamin doubled to right. Emerson Frostad singled home Hulett, Craig Hurba drove home Benjamin, and Frostad scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4.

The Chiefs came right back in the 6th to knock Rogers from the game. Harvey led off with an infield single and easily scored on a one out double by Bo Flowers. After a flyout, Oscar Bernard doubled home Flowers to give the Chiefs a 7-4 lead.

Peoria blew the game open in the 9th inning against Clinton reliever Josh Giles. Joe Simokaitis led off with a triple, his first extra base hit of the season, and scored on a double by Drew Larsen. After a groundout, Eric Patterson tripled off the left field wall to score Larsen for a 9-5 Chiefs lead. Patterson scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center off the bat of Harvey to cap the scoring at 10-5.

Estrada went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out three. Walt Nolen tossed two scoreless relief innings, Drew Dickson allowed one run in the 8th, and Adalberto Mendez tossed a scoreless 9th inning.

Aaron Smith (2B) and Ryan Harvey (RF) - Smith crushed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, singled and stole a base in the 8th to finish 2-for-4 with two RBI. Harvey blasted a three run homer in the 3rd, singled in the 6th and delivered a sacrifice fly in the 9th.

Notes... Harvey passed Jose Leon (1997) and is now 6th on the Chiefs single season HR list...Harvey also passed Albert Pujols (2000) and Troy McNaughton (1999) and tied Joe Frietas (1997) to move into 8th on the single season RBI list...Simokaitis had 18 hits, all singled in 27 games before his 9th inning triple...All Chiefs starters reached base and all but Jesse Schmidt had at least one hit...The two teams finish the four game series Tuesday night at 7:00 PM....RH Sean Gallagher (12-4) will start for the Chiefs against RH Michael Schlacht...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
