South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - It almost happened. The South Bend Silver Hawks came within inches of coming back from a four run deficit and winning Tuesday night's game against the Lansing Lugnuts. However, Travis Gulick could only muscle the ball off the left field wall and not over with a game tying three run double before the Lugnuts salted the game in the top of the ninth to win 6-4.
Lansing got off to a good start and appeared to be coasting to an easy win as Jason Armstrong opened the game with a double to center field. With one away, Eric Nielsen's single to right center placed runners at the corners. Charlie Anderson grounded out to first base and the Lugnuts jumped on top 1-0 when Armstrong crossed the plate. With Eric Nielsen standing at second Christian Snavely singled to center field bringing Nielsen home and making it 2-0 Lugnuts.
Lansing was able to extend its lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Yuber Rodriguez and a scoring fly ball off the bat of Christian Snavely in the sixth, but the Hawks mounted a comeback in the seventh.
With one out in the home half of the seventh, Cesar Nicolas singled to center field and moved to second on a wild pitch. Carlos Gonzales followed with an infield single to the pitcher putting runners at first and second. Jereme Milons grounded into a force play to put runners at the corners. Mark Reynolds walked to load the bases. Orlando Mercado walked allowing Nicolas to score making it 4-1 and keeping the bases loaded for Travis Gulick. Gulick scored the three runners with a bases clearing double to left field knotting the game at four.
In the ninth inning, the Hawks brought in Matt Elliott, who has been a machine most of the season stripped a gear in the final frame. After getting leadoff batter Yuber Rodriguez to fly out, Elliott gave up a single to David Corrente to left field and Eugenio Velez followed by belting a home run to right field to push the Lugnuts to a 6-4 lead and win.
South Bend's Matt Elliott (2-4) took the loss, while Aaron Tressler (2-0) picks up the victory.
The Silver Hawks (68-48) return to the Cove Monday to open an eight game home stand and close the regular season. The Hawks will open with a four game set against the Peoria Chiefs. Monday's are Budweiser Dollar Monday, presented by ABC 57 and B-100, featuring $1.00 tickets, $1.00 hot dogs, and $1.00 Pepsi products. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
