Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Brayan Bello shined in his fifth start of the season, tossing a no-hitter in game two of the Portland Sea Dogs (13-11) doubleheader sweep over the Reading Fightin Phils (8-16) on Thursday at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. The Sea Dogs took a victory in game one, 5-1, and brought home a 3-1 win in game two.
For the final three innings of game two, all eyes were on Bello. He had allowed just two baserunners through the first four innings, both reaching via walks. In the top of the seventh inning, Bello retired the side in order, including a strikeout, and recorded the fifth no-hitter in Sea Dogs history and the first 7.0 inning complete game no-hitter. He finished the night tossing 7.0 innings allowing one run (unearned) while walking three and striking out five.
In the second game, the Sea Dogs scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Izzy Wilson led off with a double and advanced to third on a fly ball from Christian Koss. Brandon Howlett tripled him home, giving Portland a 1-0 lead.
Reading scored their first run of the second game in the top of the fourth against Brayan Bello. After loading the bases, Ali Castillo grounded into a force out and second and drew a wild throw, scoring Jhailyn Ortiz, tying the game at 2-2. The Sea Dogs came storming back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer off the bat of Hudson Potts, giving them the lead back 3-1.
In game one, it was the Sea Dogs that got the scoring started against Fightin Phils starter Noah Skirrow in the top of the first. David Hamilton led off with a single and then stole second base. Tyler Dearden walked, and Devlin Granberg reached on an error to load the bases. Pedro Castellanos lifted a sacrifice fly to right, plating Hamilton, and giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Brandon Walter kept things scoreless on the mound for Portland, letting the bats heat up again in the bottom of the fifth. Devlin Granberg, Kole Cottam, and Pedro Castellanos all collected RBI hits in the inning, expanding the Sea Dogs' lead to 4-0.
Portland added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Christian Koss triple and a Nick Sogard RBI base hit, increasing the Sea Dogs' advantage to 5-0. The Fightin Phils added their only run of the game in the top of the seventh, on a Jack Conley triple and a Jonathan Guzman RBI groundout. The next two hitters went down in order, giving the Sea Dogs a win in the first game of the doubleheader, 5-1.
Walter (1-0) tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk, while tying his season-high with 10 strikeouts in his first win of the season.
