Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (JULY 14, 2010) - Three Dash players have been promoted within the White Sox organization from Winston-Salem. RHP Kyle Bellamy and SS Eduardo Escobar have been promoted to AA Birmingham, while LHP Chris Sale was promoted to AAA Charlotte. The Dash will receive RHP Jake Rasner from Birmingham and two players from low-A Kannapolis: IF Mike Richard (pronounced REE-shard) and LHP Garrett Johnson.
Bellamy joined the Dash on April 16 and was one of the best relief pitchers in the Carolina League. The side-arming right-hander appeared in 31 games for Winston-Salem, going 5-0 with a 1.52 ERA and converting five of six save opportunities. He struck out 59 batters and walked only 14 in 47.1 innings.
Escobar, a Carolina League All-Star, was on the Dash's opening day roster. He was named the top defensive infielder by Baseball America prior to the season and did not disappoint. At the time of his promotion, he led all Carolina League shortstops in fielding percentage (.964). He also is in the midst of his best offensive season as a professional. Escobar played in a league-leading 87 games and hit .285 with three home runs, 39 RBI, 18 doubles, eight triples, and 57 runs scored. He was fifth in the league in hits (105), thirds in runs scored, and tied for second in triples.
Sale was the White Sox' first-round draft pick last month and began his professional career with Winston. He was excellent in four outings for the Dash, posting a 2.25 ERA. Prior to his final outing with Winston-Salem, Sale had not allowed a hit or a man to reach scoring position against him. He struck out four batters in four innings of work and flashed three above-average pitches in his brief time with the Dash.
Rasner returns for a third season with Winston-Salem. He was with the Dash/Warthogs for all of 2008 & 2009, going a combined 9-14 with a 4.07 ERA in 60 games (37 starts). Rasner started 2010 with the Barons, going 1-6 with a 5.02 ERA in 22 games (eight starts). The cousin of former major league pitcher Darrell Rasner, Jake was originally selected by Texas in the seventh round of the 2005 draft before being traded to Chicago in December 2006.
Richard was acquired by the White Sox as a minor league free agent last month and played 13 games for the Intimidators. He hit .283 with no homers and six RBI. Richard was originally drafted by Oakland in the 11th round of the 2007 draft. He began the season with AA Midland and hit .185 in nine games before being sent to Advanced-A Stockton, where he hit .214 in 33 games. Richard played collegiately at Prairie View (TX) A&M University and was the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player and Outstanding Hitter of the Year in 2007.
Johnson has spent the entire season as a reliever for the Intimidators, going 4-4 with a 3.68 ERA in 29 appearances. He was drafted by the White Sox in the 29th round in 2006 out of high school and split last year between Advanced Rookie Great Falls and Kannapolis and went 4-7 with a 6.26 ERA. At 6'10", Johnson becomes the tallest player on the Dash. He helped Orme High School (Mayer, AZ) to a state basketball championship in 2006.
The Dash's roster remains at 24 players, one below the Carolina League limit.
Winston begins a four-game series at the Salem Red Sox tonight at 7:05 p.m.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, July 22 when it opens a seven-game home stand with a series against the Potomac Nationals.
