Potomac Nationals News Release
Jordan Zimmermann went four innings without giving up an earned run, but Kinston's Joe Gardner out-dueled the major-leaguer in a 3-1 Kinston victory.
Zimmermann, who is returning from Tommy John surgery last year, picked up a loss in his third rehab start for Potomac.
Kinston's Karexon Sanchez hit a double down the right field line with one out and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Jose Lozada in the first to give the K-Tribe a 1-0 lead. Zimmermann went three more scoreless innings for Potomac.
Zimmermann ended up throwing 53 total pitches, including 40 strikes. He struck out four Indians and did not allow a walk. He has now thrown nine rehab innings without giving up an earned run. Zimmermann went on to throw more in the bullpen after his four innings.
Adrian Alaniz piggy-backed off Zimmermann for the third time in a row. Last time out, Alaniz threw five no-hit innings against Frederick. But against Kinston, it wasn't such smooth sailing for the Texas native. In the fifth, the Indians got three consecutive hits to start out his first inning of work. A double from Donnie Webb, an RBI triple hit by Lucas Montero and RBI single from Karexon Sanchez extended the Kinston lead to 3-0.
Alaniz settled down the rest of the way through, striking out five in four innings of work and holding the K-Tribe scoreless for the remainder.
Kinston starter Joe Gardner had his way with Nationals batters all night long. The 2009 draft pick dominated through the first five innings, striking out eight without giving up a run. Finally the P-Nat bats came alive in the sixth. With one out, Derek Norris got hit by a pitch on his left hand. Tyler Moore drove him in with a double off the base of the right field wall to bring Potomac within 3-1.
But that was all the P-Nats could muster off Gardner. He ended up going seven strong, striking out nine, walking two and scattering six hits -- including five singles. Kinston reliever Tyler Sturdevant survived two base runners in the eighth and Cody Burns struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his Carolina League-leading 16th save.
Potomac tries to even the series tomorrow with Kinston. The Nationals send right-hander A.J. Morris against righty Austin Adams of Kinston. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
