Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Yesterday, 3B Josh Bell and RHP Steve Johnson were packaged in a deal to Baltimore by the Los Angeles Dodgers to land relief pitcher George Sherrill. Both prospects were active players on the Chattanooga Lookouts roster prior to the deal.
Bell, who was named Southern League Hitter of the Week on Monday for his efforts during the prior week, was also recently tabbed MVP of the 2009 Southern League All-Star Game. The 22-year-old switch-hitter hit .296 with 30 doubles (2nd in Southern League), 11 homers, 43 extra-base hits (2nd in SL), 52 RBIs, and a .497 slugging percentage (5th in SL) during his tenure with the Lookouts. Entering the season, he was ranked as the eighth best prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization per Baseball America. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
Johnson was promoted to Chattanooga on July 18th and had made two starts for the Lookouts, accruing a 1-1 record with a 1.69 ERA. In 10.2 innings of work, he surrendered eight hits and three walks, while striking out 15. Previously in 2009, he pitched for Inland Empire (A+), where he went 8-4 with a 3.82 ERA. The former 13th round selection in the 2005 First-Year Play Draft is the son of former Baltimore Orioles pitcher and current Orioles broadcaster, Dave Johnson. Entering the season, Johnson was slotted by Baseball America as the 15th best prospect in the Dodgers organization.
Tonight, the Chattanooga Lookouts wrap-up their away series with the Carolina Mudcats.
