Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - Earlier in the series, West Tenn handed the Braves a walk-off loss in 10-innings and Friday night, it was the Braves turn to return the favor. The M-Braves got a walk-off single from Brandon Hicks to win the series three-games-to-two in front of 3,358 fans at Trustmark Park.
Mississippi's dynamic duo of Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman went to work with two outs in the first. Heyward singled to left and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Freeman. After one inning, the Braves were up 1-0.
The D-Jaxx answered in the top of the second. Johan Limonta walked and scored on a groundout by David Espinosa. Travis Garcia singled and scored on a safety-squeeze bunt to put the visitors up 2-1.
Heyward came up big in his next at-bat. Travis Jones singled and stole second to move into scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Heyward ripped a liner to left that carried over Espinosa's head and to the wall. Heyward's double plated Jones easily and tied the score at two.
Mississippi retook the lead with two runs on four hits in the fifth. Travis Jones and Matt Young hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Brandon Hicks then singled home Jones and Freeman singled home Young to give the M-Braves a 4-2 lead.
West Tenn got two runs in the seventh to knot the score at four. Greg Halman drew a bases loaded walk that forced in Espinosa and Hubbard hit a sac-fly the scored Mel Stocker to tie the game.
Willie Cabrera led off the top of the 10th with a single up the middle and Phillip Britton bunted him over to second. After Young was intentionally walked with two outs, Brandon Hicks ripped a single to right-center that scored Cabrera from second with the game-winning run.
Scott Diamond posted yet another quality start for the M-Braves. He gave up two runs on five hits over six innings and left the game with a 4-2 lead. Brett Butts gave up two runs in one-third of an inning and Kevin Gunderson threw a scoreless inning-and-two-thirds. Craig Kimbrel made his AA debut and threw two scoreless innings to earn his first AA win.
Nick Hill allowed four runs on nine M-Braves hits over six innings. Danny Christensen tossed a shutout inning and Ricky Orta tossed two shutout innings. Joe Newby gave up a run in the 10th to fall to 0-1.
The Braves welcome the Montgomery Biscuits to town Saturday night for the last five games of a 10-game homestand at Trustmark Park. In game one, the Braves will send righty Kyle Cofield to the hill against the Biscuits' Brian Baker.
August gets underway as the Braves welcome the Montgomery Biscuits to town for Phillip Wellman Bobblehead Night. The first 1,500 fans through Trustmark Park's gates will receive a free Phillip Wellman bobblehead and everyone will get to watch the zany antics of Birdzerk throughout the Saturday night game, all compliments of Y101 and 16 WAPT-TV.
