JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns announced today that Eagle's View Academy senior Austin Maddox has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Bragan Award. The Bragan Award is given annually to a North Florida high school senior baseball player who has exhibited outstanding skill on the baseball diamond and strong character and leadership off the field.

Maddox was nominated by a panel of experts from throughout North Florida chaired by longtime local amateur baseball expert Richard Abiss. The decision was finalized by Suns President & General Manager Peter D. Bragan, Jr.

"Austin Maddox might be the best catching prospect to come out of Jacksonville since John Rosette," said Bragan. "He should really help the Gators and he has a great chance to play in the big leagues someday."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher hit .554 with 9 home runs and 33 RBI on the season. Maddox graduated from Eagle's View Academy this year and has committed to the University of Florida where he will continue his baseball career for Gators head coach Kevin O'Sullivan.

The 2009 Bragan Award will be presented to Maddox on Saturday, August 1, during a pre-game ceremony at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Maddox is the third player to receive the Bragan Award, following Episcopal graduate & current Florida State Seminole Hunter Scantling, and former Fletcher Senator & current UNF Osprey Sam Perry. The award is named in honor of Peter Bragan, Sr., who has owned the Jacksonville Suns since 1984 and has made great contributions to the overall cultural and sports scene in Jacksonville, including high school and youth athletics. The award is modeled after a 1930's Nokona-brand lefthanded fielder's glove that belonged to Bragan Sr. when he was playing semi-pro ball in Philadelphia. The original glove was used to cast a mold from which to make the awards.
