Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Despite 18 hits, the Tennessee Smokies let the BayBears hang around on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, but the BayBears fell in a 5-4 contest, extending their losing streak to six.
Tennessee's first hit came from their first batter as Nate Samson smashed a single, and he came on a double by James Adduci. The BayBears (52-53, 15-20) struck back quickly in the bottom of the second as Ricardo Sosa singled and came home on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Yunesky Sanchez.
Chris Carpenter struggled through the third in his Double-A debut with two hit batsmen and a bunt single loading the bases with no outs. Sosa bounced into a double play to put the BayBears on top. Pete Clifford's two-out RBI single gave the BayBears a two-run lead.
Barry Enright coughed up a dozen hits over five innings, and he let the lead slip away in the fifth. With the Smokies (50-55, 18-17) down by a run, James Adduci tied the score with a solo homer. Marquez Smith reached on a single and came in on a knock by Tyler Colvin who went 5-for-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee's defense fell apart with Clifford reaching on an error by Blake Lalli and advancing to third on a throwing error by Tony Thomas. Matt Tupman's grounder to short was thrown away by Samson to bring home Clifford, tying the score at 4-4.
Tennessee grabbed the lead for good in the sixth as they had their first two men reach against Ramon Sanchez. Samson hit a liner back to Sanchez which would have been a triple play had Sanchez caught it. He didn't, and then he threw the ball wild to first which brought home the go-ahead run.
The BayBears only managed two hits after the fourth inning. They both came in the eighth, but both men were stranded as Chris Rahl fanned to end the frame. Jayson Ruhlman (S, 3) set the BayBears down in order in the ninth.
The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They'll kick off a 10-game road trip at Regions Park on Saturday night at 7:05. Wes Roemer (6-6, 3.66) gets the nod against the Birmingham Barons. The BayBears are back home on Wednesday, August 12 to battle the Huntsville Stars at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
