Burlington Bees News Release

One night after a 1-for-19 showing with runners in scoring position, the Bees rode a pair of four-run innings to a 9-3 win over Beloit in their final game of 2010 at Pohlman Field.

Beloit's home ballpark had become a house of horrors for the Bees. They had lost seven straight in southern Wisconsin, dating all the way back to May 9, but the streak was stopped in its tracks on Tuesday night. The Bees scored four runs in each of the fifth and eighth innings, the first of occasion of which was keyed by Ben Theriot's first professional home run, a solo shot to bring the Bees to within one. The other big blow of the fifth inning came when Whit Merrifield's grounder snuck through the legs of Snappers third baseman Reggie Williams, allowing a pair of runs to come home.

If the fifth inning put the Bees in command, it was the eighth that put the game away. The wildness of Beloit reliever Eliecer Cardenas (three walks) afforded Burlington the opportunity to plate four runs, including two on bases-loaded walks to Carlo Testa and Whit Merrifield.

The prolific offensive effort allowed the visiting club to take advantage of a superb night from Keaton Hayenga (W, 3-12), who allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in seven innings for his second straight win after dropping 12 consecutive decisions dating back to May.

The Bees head to Cedar Rapids to take on the Kernels in the opener of a three-game series on Wednesday night. Join Nick Devlin on News Radio 1490 KBUR at 6:20 for the pregame show.
