Portland Beavers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Kendry Morales was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs and Tommy Murphy was 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Salt Lake Bees completed a four-game sweep of the Portland Beavers 11-4 Monday night at Franklin Covey Field.
The Beavers return home to begin a four-game series with Sacramento, Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at PGE Park.
Craig Stansberry was 2-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Beavers (49-74). Stansberry was 8-for-19 (.421) with a home run and nine RBIs in the series with the Bees.
Salt Lake starting pitcher Henry Bonilla earned his league-leading 11th victory, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings of work.
The Beavers took advantage of three Salt Lake errors, two by Murphy, to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Kendry Morales put the Bees (65-57) ahead in the bottom of the first, clubbing a two-run home run to give Salt Lake a 2-1 lead.
Ray Chang singled to begin the top of the second and after a walk to Justin Hatcher and a single from Peter Ciofrone loaded the bases, Stansberry hit a bases-clearing double to give the Beavers a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning and runners on first and third base, Murphy doubled to left field to bring the Bees within a run. Salt Lake nearly added another run, but Gregory Porter was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball to Stansberry.
The Bees started off the bottom half of the sixth inning with four consecutive hits that produced two runs of Portland reliever Aaron Rakers. Rakers has allowed a run in five of his last six appearances dating back to Aug. 5 against Memphis.
Mike Eylward led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and Morales followed with his second home run of the game to give the Bees a 7-4 lead. Jared Wells replaced Rakers and his first pitch sailed over the head of Justin Hatcher advancing Porter to third base. Tommy Murphy then drove in his third run of the game to extend the Salt Lake lead to four.
Two runs scored in the bottom of the eighth on what would have been Brandon Wood's 20th home run of the season. Wood was called out after passing Morales on the bases.
Rich Thompson worked two scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory for the Bees.
NOTES: Stansberry extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Brian Myrow extended his hitting streak to seven games and is currently second in the PCL in batting average (.352) ... Steve Watkins left the game in the third inning after aggravating a rib injury.
