
Bees Down Kernels, 10-7, To Take Series

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels and Bees slugged it out for five innings, but the bats went quiet in the later innings as Burlington pushed past Cedar Rapids 10-7 on Wednesday night. The Kernels took an early 2-0 lead by scoring a pair in the 1st inning. Gary Mitchell's RBI single scored Kevin Moesquit. Zach Wright's RBI single plated Alex Yarbrough.
Burlington evened the score at 2-2 in the 2nd inning. Rashun Dixon led off with a base on balls and came home on a RBI triple down the right field line by Max Muncy. Douglas Landaeta's RBI single brought Muncy home later in the inning. The Kernels took the lead right back at 3-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Trevor Hairgrove led off the inning with a double and came home to score on a RBI single by Alex Yarbrough.
In the 3rd inning Burlington's Rashun Dixon launched a 2-run home run to left, giving the Bees their first lead of the game 4-3.
The Bees then scored three runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. Nick Rickles homered to left to start the 4th inning frame. Wade Kirkland then singled, stole 2nd base, and reached 3rd base on a throwing error by Kernels catcher Zach Wright. Kirkland then scored on a missed catch by Kernels shortstop Trevor Hairgrove. The error allowed Chih-Fang Pan to reach, and he later scored on a RBI by Eliezer Mesa.
In the 5th inning three straight singles loaded the bases with no outs, and all those runners came home to score. Bobby Crocker came home on a RBI sacrifice fly by Sean Jamieson. Eliezer Mesa's 2-RBI double allowed Douglas Landaeta and Nick Rickles to score.
The Kernels then pushed four runs across in the bottom of the 5th inning with two outs, cutting the Bees lead to 10-7. Abel Baker's RBI double to right to scored Gary Mitchell. Trevor Hairgrove and Frazier Hall then hit back to back home runs. Hairgrove's 3rd of the year went to left and also brought Baker home. Hall's blast went to right field to cut the Burlington lead to three runs.
Cam Bedrosian started for the Kernels and went two innings. He allowed three runs on two hits while walking four. Joe Melioris (3-3) pitched 1.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out two and walking one. Aaron Meade pitched 2.1 innings and issued three runs on six hits while striking out one. Logan Odom went two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one.
Max Perlman started for Burlington and was able to go 4.2 innings. He allowed seven runs on 11 hits as he walked two. Drew Tyson (2-0) picked up the win in relief, going 3.1 innings and allowing no runs on no hits while walking three and striking out three. Jeff Urlaub recorded his 3rd save, throwing a scoreless 9th inning.
The Kernels now hit the road for the next six games, beginning tomorrow night at Davenport vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Game time tomorrow night is 7:00 p.m. The road trip also takes the Kernels to Beloit before returning home on July 4 at 5:05 p.m. vs. Wisconsin!
