Burlington Bees News Release
Davenport, IA (Jul 16, 2008) - The Burlington Bees began a three-game series at Quad Cities Wednesday afternoon and lost 8-2. The Bees only registered four hits in the game with two of them coming for Kyle Martin.
The Bees began the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Johnny Giavotella hit a double and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Giavotella then came around to score when David Lough hit a sacrifice fly to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. That lead did not last long with the River Bandits answering with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.
The Bees took the lead once again in the top of the second inning. With one out, Martin singled and moved to third on a Jamar Walton double. Martin then scored on a Juan Rivera ground-out and the Bees held a 2-1 lead. Once again Quad Cities answered the run as they scored in the bottom of the third to tie the game 2-2.
The score remained 2-2 all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning. In the seventh, Quad cities busted the game open scoring four runs. The big hit of the inning was a Carlos Pupo three-run homerun to give the River Bandits a 6-2 lead. Ross Oeder hit a two-run homerun in the eighth inning to finish off the scoring for Quad Cities.
Alex Caldera got the start for the Bees but did not get a decision. In five innings of work, Caldera allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Zach Peterson allowed three runs in 1.1 innings of work but had to come out early due to an injury. He took the loss to move to 2-3 on the season. Burke Baldwin finished things out for the Bees allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
The Bees and Quad Cities continue the series Thursday night. Matt Mitchell is the scheduled starter. First pitch is set for 7:00. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com. The Bees return home to Community Field Saturday July 19th for a six-game home stand.
