Additon becomes first QC pitcher to eight wins while Pupo drives in four

Carlos Pupo, Ross Oeder, and Pete Kozma drove in all eight runs and Nick Additon threw seven strong innings as the Quad Cities River Bandits broke a late tie and exploded for an 8-2 win over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (14-12, 47-43) benefitted from a series of strong offensive performances, as Pupo drove in four runs on three extra-base hits while Kozma and Oeder each tallied two hits, two runs, and two RBI. On the mound, Additon held the Burlington (14-12, 44-51) lineup in check to become the first River Bandits' pitcher to collect his eighth win this season.

The game was tied at two runs apiece until the River Bandits busted out the bats in the seventh. Adron Chambers drew a one-out walk to start the rally and moved to second on a single by Ross Oeder. Pete Kozma broke the tie with a line drive single to left that scored Chambers, and the runners moved to second and third on the throw to the plate. After a pitching change removed Zach Peterson from the ballgame, Carlos Pupo tagged Burke Baldwin's second pitch well out of the yard to left, clearing the ballpark for a three-run homer and a 6-2 lead.

Oeder added a two-run homer in the eighth to cap the scoring and reach the 8-2 final. The Wright State product is hitting a blistering .412 in four games since returning from a back injury, including the first two home runs of his professional career in back-to-back games on Monday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Additon (8-3) overcame two runs on three hits over his first two innings to hold the Bees punchless over his next five frames. The 20-year-old southpaw retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced, and all four of the hits he allowed came on two-strike counts. He struck out three without issuing a walk to earn the victory.

Jared Bradford did the rest, adding two hitless innings of relief to close the door. Thanks to the strong outings by Additon and Bradford, Burlington managed just two baserunners after the second inning - neither of which advanced past first base.

After the Bees got five solid innings from starter Alex Caldera, the bullpen got knocked around late. Zach Peterson (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings, taking the loss before being removed due to an apparent arm injury. Burke Baldwin did not fare much better, yielding three runs on four hits over 1.2 frames, including the homers to Pupo and Oeder.

Each team broke into the scoring column early, as the Bees and River Bandits traded sacrifice flies in the first inning. Johnny Giavotella doubled and scored on a fly ball by David Lough for the game's first run, while Chambers led off the bottom of the frame with a triple before crossing the plate on Kozma's sacrifice fly to right.

After Burlington added a run in the second, Pupo evened the score on his first double of the game in the third. Kozma put himself in scoring position with a one-out double, and Pupo brought him home with a two-base hit off the wall in left to tie the score at 2-2.
