Kernels rally for 8-7 win over Dayton

July 16, 2008 - Julio Perez hit a 2 run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home Andrew Romine and Hector Estrella as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons, 8-7, in front of 4,318 fans on Mercy Medical Center Night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The two runs made a winner out of Kernel reliever Tim Kiely (2-0) who allowed a run on two hits and struck out three in an inning of relief. Eddie McKiernan retired Dayton in order in the ninth for his 12th save of the season.

Perez was 2 for 4 on the night with 3 RBI and a stolen base to lead the Kernels offense. Andrew Romine, Hector Estrella and Efren Navarro each had two hits and an RBI as the Kernels had 11 hits in the game.

Neither starting pitcher had a good outing and didn't figure in the final decision. Kernels starter Michael Davitt allowed six runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five over 4.2 innings, while Dayton starter Kyle Lotzkar allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out five over three innings.

Dayton reliever Derrick Conatser (2-1) was tagged with the loss. Keltavious Jones and Devin Mesoraco each had three hits for the Dragons. With the win, the Kernels improve to 15-10 in the second half and 47-46 overall while Dayton falls to 14-12 and 42-52.

Game two of this three game set is Thursday at 7 pm. The first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 6 pm receive a free Kernels hat, thanks to Office Elements. It's also a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday. Twelve ounce draft beer is $1.50 and bottled soda and water are just two bucks. First pitch is set for 7 o'clock.
