Beavers drop fifth straight

PORTLAND, Ore. - Anthony Ortega earned his fourth Triple-A victory and Brandon Wood was 3-for-4 and hit his 31st home run of the season as the Salt Lake Bees defeated the Portland Beavers 5-2 Monday night at PGE Park.

Freddy Sandoval doubled twice among his three hits and was one of five players to drive in a run for the Bees (79-57), who are zeroing in on the North Division crown.

Ortega, who is already 4-0 in just five Triple-A starts since joining the Bees from Class AA Arkansas, allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out four over seven innings against the Beavers, who have lost five in a row.

Darren O'Day inherited two runners with no outs in the bottom of the ninth but retired all three batters he faced to secure the win and earn his sixth save.

The Beavers (68-68) enjoyed a brief lead after getting a run-scoring single up the middle from Luke Carlin in the second, but Sandoval doubled and scored on an RBI single from Kendry Morales in the third.

Wood, who on Monday was named a PCL postseason All-Star, and Chip Ambres exchanged solo home runs in the fourth inning, and the game remained knotted 2-2 until the sixth when Bobby Wilson's double scored Morales, who reached on a leadoff double of his own, and Adam Pavkovich added an RBI single.

Sandoval's RBI double upped the advantage to 5-2 in the seventh.

The loss went to Josh Geer (8-9), who struck out eight across 6 2/3 innings but gave up five runs and nine hits in his 27th start of the season, which matched the most by a Portland pitcher since the 2001 campaign.

The Beavers and Bees will play a doubleheader Tuesday night at PGE Park, with the first of two, seven-inning games starting at 6:05 p.m. Shawn Estes takes the hill for a major league rehab start for Portland in the opener.

NOTES: Brian Myrow hit his 53rd double in two seasons with the Beavers, taking over sole possession of third place behind Jon Knott and Paul McAnulty among career leaders since the team returned to the PCL in 2001 ... Bryan Corey worked two scoreless innings in his third rehab appearance with Portland.
