Beast to Host Skate-A-Thon in Support of National Women's Sledge Hockey Player Claire Buchanan
February 10, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - On Saturday, February 20th, The Brampton Beast, ECHL affiliate of the St. John's IceCaps and Montreal Canadiens, will be hosting a Skate-A-Thon Fundraiser in support of Brampton native and national women's sledge hockey player, Claire Buchanan.
Join us at the Powerade Centre at 5:00 p.m. for a Glow-In-The-dark, Skate-A-Thon Fundraiser with donations going towards Buchanan's expenses to train and compete with the Canadian National Women's Sledge Hockey Team. Women's sledge hockey is not yet a Paralympic sport and does not receive any funding support. As such, every national team member pays for their own expenses to represent Canada on the world stage.
The event will take on a cosmic effect which includes glow-in-the-dark skating and a light show from the masterminds behind the Beast pre-game show, FFP Lasers. Awards will be given out and announced during the Beast game. Activities such as raffles and sign making stations will be available.
Claire was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spinal cord does not form properly. In addition to competing for Canada with women's sledge hockey, Claire has also played wheelchair basketball at the NCAA level.
"I'm excited about the opportunities I have been given and I want to involve others and bring awareness to our team in Brampton," Claire said.
"To be able to work with Oscar's Roadhouse and the Brampton Beast is a wonderful opportunity and I'm grateful for the good relationship I have with both organizations."
To take part in this exciting event, $20 registration packages may be purchased ahead of time and include one ticket to the Beast game, a glow-in-the-dark item, a choice of burger or hotdog and a soft drink and a participant badge. You may register as an individual or as a team of 10 or more. Pledges are welcomed and are based on the amount of time the pledgee will be skating. The Beast will be taking on the Wheeling Nailers later on that evening.
Don't skate? Not to worry! You can still participate by having someone skate on your behalf. If you wish not to attend the Skate-A-Thon but would like to attend the Beast game, a $20 package is available that includes a game ticket with a portion of the proceeds donated to Claire and her journey.
Don't miss out on an exciting opportunity to help out local Brampton athletes.
The Skate-A-Thon fundraiser will be a fun night full of prizes, giveaways, activities and more. Don't forget to register: click here!
The Beast then return home for a 7:15 PM game against the Toledo Walleye on Friday, February 12. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
