Bears Raise Curtain On Regular Season With Four-Game Road Trip To Pens, Norfolk And Philadelphia

The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club jumped out to a perfect 3-0-0-0 start this past week, defeating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this past Wednesday and sweeping a two-game series in Norfolk on Friday and Saturday. HERSHEY scored five power play goals Wednesday in an 8-4 win over the Penguins at Wachovia Arena, with Graham Mink scoring three goals. The BEARS then defeated the Admirals 5-3 Friday night and 4-3 in a shootout Saturday. HERSHEY is 3-0-0-0 to begin the season for the first time since 1999-2000. Goaltender Daren Machesney won the first two games of the season, with backstop Simeon Varlamov earning his first career AHL win Saturday night in Virginia.

After a road game in Philadelphia Friday, HERSHEY'S 2008-09 home opener is Saturday, October 18 against the Syracuse Crunch. Face-off Saturday is set for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911. The BEARS are also home this Sunday at 5:00 p.m., facing I-81 rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

High Octane Offense: After one week of the 2008-09 regular season, the BEARS possess the American Hockey League's best record at 3-0-0-0, lead the league in goals scored (17) and have the top two scorers in the AHL on its roster. Keith Aucoin, who was nominated today for Reebok AHL Player of the Week honors, leads the league in points with seven. Graham Mink, who leads the league in goals with four, is second in the AHL in points with six. The Chocolate and White put up 43 individual points in just three games this past week to begin the season.

Dubuc, Lacroix to Rays:The BEARS announced Sunday that forwards Michael Dubuc and Maxime Lacroix have been assigned to South Carolina (ECHL). With the moves, HERSHEY now has 27 players on its roster.

Upcoming promotions-PNC Bank night at GIANT Center comes up on Saturday, October 18 when the BEARS open the 2008-09 home portion of the schedule. The first 8,000 fans will receive a free magnet schedule, courtesy of PNC Bank. Pepsi's Party on the Plaza will begin outside GIANT Center before the game up until puck drop at 7:00 p.m.

Washington update-Following a season-opening loss in Atlanta Friday, the Capitals defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 Saturday at Verizon Center. Alex Oveckhin scored two goals Saturday, and former BEARS forward Brooks Laich scored the game-winner. Bruce Boudreau's team is home Monday against Vancouver at Verizon Center. Face-off is at 7:00 p.m.
