Last Week's Games
Friday, October 10th - Rockford IceHogs 4 at Quad City Flames 2
The Flames dropped a 4-2 decision in Rockford to open their 2008-09 campaign on Friday. Kris Chucko scored twice, but his contribution could not overcome four power-play goals by the Hogs. After a scoreless first period, the teams exchanged second period goals. Petri Kontiola scored the first of his two goals during a 5-on-3 Hogs power play. Chucko responded with 2:56 left in the period when he beat Rockford's Corey Crawford just one second after a Flames power play expired. The marker held up as the teams skated into the second intermission knotted at one. In the third, the Flames captured the lead on a power-play marker by Chucko at 7:25 of the period. Chucko chipped in the rebound from a Matt Pelech shot to give the Flames their first lead of the season. The Hogs answered less than a minute later when Kontiola scored just four seconds into a power-play. Rockford recorded another power-play marker two minutes later when Pascal Pelletier scored his first goal as a Hog. Troy Brouwer secured the Rockford victory with a power-play goal at 19:20 of the period.
Saturday, October 11th - Quad City Flames 3 at Rockford IceHogs 1
A strong closing push earned the Flames their first win of 2008-09 on Opening Night at the i wireless Center. The 3-1 win over Rockford featured Hugo Carpentier's first career goal and third period markers from Adam Cracknell and Warren Peters. Matt Keetley earned his first victory of the year as he turned aside 23 of 24 Rockford shots. For the second consecutive night, the Flames controlled play in the opening period but were unable to beat Rockford's netminder. Antii Niemi stopped all nine Flames shots he saw including a great chance off the stick of Dan Ryder. Flames netminder Matt Keetley responded by stopping all five shots he faced. The second period featured plenty of specialty teams play as the squads combined for six man advantages in the middle period. Both teams were able to cash in on one of their man advantage opportunities. Hugo Carpentier found a loose puck in the crease and swatted it into the Rockford net at 2:33 of the middle frame during a Flames man advantage. Kyle Greentree earned his first point as a Flame after a nifty move resulted in the rebound that Carpentier buried. Adam Cracknell drew the secondary assist to extend his scoring streak to two games. The Hogs responded less than two minutes later when Michael Blunden scored on the power-play following a feed from Tim Brent. The power-play markers were the only goals of the middle frame as the teams began the third period knotted at one. The Flames unleashed a third period onslaught to secure the win. Quad City enjoyed five early period power-plays en route to generating a franchise-record tying 19 shots on goal in the closing frame. After being denied by the herois of Niemi during the power-play opportunites, Adam Cracknell broke through with an even strength goal at 12:25 of the closing frame. The tally was Cracknell's first of the season and pushed him past Kris Chucko for the early season team lead in scoring. Warren Peters added an empty netter to secure the victory with 37 seconds left.
Sunday, October 12th - Peoria Rivermen 3 at Quad City Flames 2 OT
Late goals helped the Rivermen sink the Flames on Sunday at the i wireless Center as Quad City suffered a 3-2 overtime loss. Brad Winchester tied the game with 2:20 left in regulation before Steve Regier scored his second goal of the night at 3:31 of the overtime period. Peter Vandermeer and Ryan Wilson each scored their first goals as Flames in the loss. The Flames finish their opening weekend with a mark of 1-1-1-0. The Flames penalty kill was featured in the first as they killed off four Rivermen power plays including a double minor and 1:11 of 5-on-3 time. The period also featured some post work as Peoria's Nikolay Lemtyugov hit the goal post on an early chance and the crossbar on a chance late in the frame. Following the scoreless first period, the teams exchanged goals during a 15-second span of the second period. Peter Vandermeer scored after finding a loose puck just outside of the Peoria crease. The chance was created by hard work in the trenches by the duo of Brett Sutter and David Van der Gulik. The Rivermen responded just 15 seconds later when Steve Regier netted his first goal of the season off a rush into the Quad City zone. Nicholas Drazenovic and Nikolay Lemtyugov earned assists on the marker. Ryan Wilson netted the first goal of his professional career at 3:04 of the third period. Wilson fired a puck from the slot past Peoria's Ben Bishop during a Flames power play for his inaugural tally. The Rivermen netted a late goal to force the extra session as Brad Winchester jammed a rebound past Flames netminder Matt Keetley with just 2:20 left in regulation time. The Peoria power-play marker forced the extra session. In the overtime, the Rivermen took all four shots on goal before Steve Regier struck again to end the contest. Regier scored on a goal-mouth scramble to secure the Rivermen's first win of the season.
