Bears Fall to Phantoms for Seventh Straight Time

January 17, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

For the first time in the history of the BEARS vs. Phantoms rivalry, one team now has seven straight wins over the other. The Phantoms scored four unanswered goals to beat the BEARS 4-0 at the Wachovia Spectrum Friday night for their seventh straight victory in the season series. The BEARS and Phantoms are now tied for second place in the Eastern Division with 51 points.

Philadelphia scored three goals in the first 7:22 of the first period and never looked back. The Phantoms got goals from Kirby Law, Boyd Kane and B. J. Abel. They took advantage of the BEARS, not so special teams, in scoring a power-play, short-handed and an even strength goal respectively. The Phantoms went into the dressing room with a 3-0 lead.

HERSHEY could not muster a shot on Antero Niittymaki in the entire second period. It was the first time since March 12, 1999 that the BEARS would go shotless in a period. With 1:11 remaining in the second period, Peter White would give the Phantoms a 4-0 lead, scoring again on the power-play.

A scoreless third period would see the Phantoms only put two shots on BEARS goalie, Peter Budaj, who took the loss in net.

The BEARS return home Saturday and Sunday for two games. Saturday they face the first-place Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 pm. Sunday the BEARS play host to the Cleveland Barons at 5:00 pm. Join John Walton, voice of the BEARS for all of the action with the pre-game show beginning 20 minutes prior to face off.
