Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA – Four unanswered goals over a span of 11 minutes in the second period was all the scoring the Lowell Lock Monsters needed in a 4-2 win over the Springfield Falcons at the Civic Center on Saturday evening. Peter Ferraro and Nikos Tselios provided the goals for Springfield. Four different Lock Monsters scored in the game while forwards Mike Zigomanis and Ryan Bayda recorded two assists each. Lowell netminder Brent Krahn made 39 saves as the Falcons outshot the Lock Monsters, 41-35.

After a scoreless first period, Ferraro scored 40 seconds into the middle frame to provide the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The forward finished a two-on-one Falcons rush after his attempt to pass to Mike Stutzel was blocked by Lowell defenseman Tomas Malec. Ferraro collected the rebound and snapped a shot past Krahn for his tenth goal of the season.

However, the Lock Monsters vaulted to a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals separated by a minute. Forward David Inman scored five seconds into a Lowell power play from the right edge of the crease by redirecting a pass from the left point by defenseman Brad Fast for his fifth goal of the season at 8:08 of the period.

Right wing Matt Davidson put back his own rebound in the low slot for the Lock Monsters' second goal at the 9:08 mark. Springfield goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier made a left pad save on Davidson's initial shot.

Lowell collected back-to-back goals in rapid fashion again late in the frame. Center Brett Lysak made the score 3-1 with a shorthanded goal after blocking a shot from the high slot by Erik Westrum. Pelletier beat Lysak to the puck which had caromed to the Falcons' zone, but the Lowell forward knocked down the goaltender's clearing attempt and scored into an empty net with 2:15 remaining in the period.

Malec followed with a breakaway goal 1:07 later after stepping out of the penalty box to receive a pass from Bayda.

Tselios provided the Falcons a glimmer of hope 5:21 into the third period by scoring his fourth goal of the campaign. The defenseman skated down the slot and buried a centering feed from behind the net by rookie Martin Podlesak.

However, the Falcons were not able to beat Krahn again in the game.

By converting one of their three chances with the man advantage in the contest, the Lock Monsters improved their league-leading power-play percentage to 18.9%.

While nursing an injury suffered on Wednesday against the Worcester IceCats, defenseman Mike Wilson was behind the Falcons bench for the second consecutive evening as an assistant coach. Actual Falcons assistant coach Gord Dineen was at the "E" Center as the Utah Grizzlies retired his #2 jersey in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday evening.

The Falcons will again meet the Lock Monsters on Sunday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Game time is 4:00 p.m. The contest will not be broadcast on radio in Springfield. The game begins a stretch of five consecutive road games for the Falcons.
