Hershey Bears News Release
Last Week: The Bears began the week with it's first home game of 2003, and the team responded with a 4-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch. Phil Sauve earned the win in goal, his league leading 15th of the season, and the Bears scored four straight goals to seal the victory. Winners of two straight, the Bears traveled to Binghamton to take on the Senators on Friday night. With Phil Sauve away from the team on personal leave, rookie Peter Budaj stepped up with the best performance of his pro career. Budaj made 43 saves and earned his second professional shutout in blanking the Senators 3-0. The 43 saves for Budaj was a personal best and a Bears season high. Back home on Saturday, HERSHEY won it's fourth in a row by beating the first place Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2. Brian Willsie scored the game winning goal in the third period, and Jordan Krestanovich scored his second goal in as many games to lead the Bears to victory. Peter Budaj won his second game in as many nights to put his record over the .500 mark for the first time at 6-5-1. HERSHEY'S four game winning streak was stopped at GIANT Center on Sunday night when the Bears fell to the Binghamton Senators 4-2. Mikhail Kuleshov and Steve Brule scored goals in the losing effort.
Notables: Following the game on Saturday night, forward Brian Willsie was recalled by the Colorado Avalanche. Willsie joined the team in Raleigh, North Carolina on Sunday and played in the Avs' 3-2 overtime win at Carolina. Riku Hahl remains on recall with Colorado and played yesterday as well. Jordan Krestanovich has a current three game point streak after goals on Friday and Saturday, and an assist on Sunday. Goaltender Steve Stirling, backing up Peter Budaj on Friday and Saturday in the absence of Phil Sauve, was sent back to Atlantic City after the game on Sunday night. Eric Bertrand was back in the lineup Wednesday night against Syracuse for the first time in seven games. Bertrand responded by scoring goals in three straight games before being held off the scoresheet Sunday against Binghamton.
Colorado Update: Milan Hejduk scored two goals including the overtime game winner as the Avalanche beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. Colorado now returns home for home games this week against Detroit and Dallas. Scott Parker and Brad Larsen continue to be sidelined with injuries.
