WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored twice in the first inning and the pitching made it hold up in a 2-1 win over the Rockford Aviators before 5,078 fans Saturday night.

Michael Shreves allowed one run on two hits over six innings to improve to 4-0. Bret Dahlson pitched a scoreless seventh and Chuck Ghysels put out a scoring threat in the eighth. In the ninth, Andrew Brockett notched his league-leading 15th save.

Yazy Arbelo and Jose Vargas each drove in runs in the first inning. The Beach Bums continue to lead the East Division at 29-13. Rockford still paces the West Division with a 26-15 mark. The teams have split the first two games of the weekend series with the rubber match Sunday at Wuerfel Park 5:05pm.

In the first inning the Alex Tomasovich looped a one-out double into the right field corner. He'd score a batter later on Vargas' double to left center. Vargas then scampered home on Arbelo's single to right field and it was 2-0.

Rockford starter Kyle Bruggeman was filthy the rest of the way. The Beach Bums managed just four more hits off him over his seven innings of work. Still, the 2-0 lead held thanks to the Beach Bums' pitching. Shreves retired the first 12 batters until Danny Stienstra doubled just inside the third base bag to start the fifth inning. He'd score on Elijah Trail's one-out flare single to left and it was 2-1.

Rockford would have a few chances to tie, but clutch pitching a timely double plays doomed them. In the fifth, Rockford had runners at first and second before Justin Fox hit into a 4-3 inning ending double play.

In the seventh, Rockford had runners at the corners with one out before Dahlson induced Trail into a 4-6-3 double play. Then in the eighth, Rockford had the bases loaded with one out and Ghysels would get Brian Bistagne to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The Beach Bums haven't lost a three-game series since late May and try to extend that streak Sunday evening. Sunday is another Family FUNday promotion with kids allowed to run the bases and all the players, coaches and mascots available for postgame autographs.
