Joliet Slammers News Release

Washington, PA- The Joliet Slammers (19-25) bats go quiet following the first inning in their 2-1 loss against the Washington Wild Things (19-25) on Saturday night.

The Slammers scored first in game two against hurler Matt Sergey. With two outs SS Alfredo Rodriguez was plunked. 3B Mike Garza smacked a triple to right field, scoring Rodriguez and giving the Slammers a 1-0 lead.

Sergey calmed down following the first frame, retiring the next 13 Slammers. Washington put two on in both the second and third innings before Adam Giacalone escaped both frames. But the Wild Things would tag Giacalone for a run in the forth. 2B Matt Peters led off the inning single, which was followed by a catcher Maxx Garrett single. After Peters was retired on a fielder's choice, Andrew Heck singled up the middle to drive in Garrett and tie the game at 1-1 before Giacalone got out of the inning.

The Wild Things would score again in the bottom of the sixth. With a one ball, one strike count, Garrett crushed a solo home run over the left-field fence. That put the Wild Things up 2-1. McNorton struck out SS Austin Wobrock before LF Andrew reached second on a fielding error by LF Phil Bates. With a runner on second and two outs, McNorton got CF Daniel Poma to fly out to right field.

The Slammers went quietly in the top of the seventh, falling to the Wild Things in a shortened game. McNorton (3-2) took the loss while reliever Steve Messner (1-1) earned the win for the Wild Things. Mike Garza is our Merchants and Manufacturer's Bank Player of the Game with a RBI triple in the first inning. The Slammers will be back in action on Sunday at 1:35pmCT. Andrew Strenge will start for the Joliet.
