Beach Bums Topple Midwest to End Slide

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums snapped a three-game slide in a big way with an 11-2 win over the Midwest Sliders on Sunday night at Wuerfel Park.

The Beach Bums grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, batting around. Zack Kalter drew a one-out walk before Brad Miller and Jeff Stevens singled on consecutive pitches to load the bases. The first run scored as Jeff Brown reached on an error. Mike Goetz drove in a run after reaching on a fielder's choice and Mike Epping capped the scoring by driving in two with a sharp single to left.

Seven runs crossed in the third inning as the Beach Bums opened an 11-0 lead and chased Midwest starter Mark Suchowiecki from the game by sending 13 men to the plate. Patrick Perry began the inning with a single and with one out Brad Miller recorded his second hit of the game as well. Jeff Stevens drove in his first run as a member of the Beach Bums with a single to plate Perry. Jeff Brown drove in a run with a single while Steve Young cleared the bases with a three-run double. Kyle Maunus and Zack Kalter also drove home runs in the inning.

Midwest scored in the fourth and sixth inning against Beach Bums starter Brett Bostelman. Dom Lombardi tripled and scored in the fourth and Jonnie Knoble walked and scored on an RBI single by Lombardi in the sixth. Bostelman threw six innings and allowed two runs to tally his fourth win of the season. He allowed four hits while walking six and striking out four. Pete McEneaney threw the final three to tally his first save.

Steve Young finished with a 3-for-3 game, scoring a run, driving in three, and also drawing a walk to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game honors. Traverse City finished with 12 hits and Brad Miller and Jeff Stevens also tallied a pair of hits while scoring a pair of runs. Stevens was making his first start for the Beach Bums.

The Beach Bums (31-23) will continue a 12-game homestand when the Florence Freedom make their first visit of 2008 to Wuerfel Park on Monday night in a 7:05 pm game to open a three-game series. RHP Jon Haldis (1-1, 10.29) will make his first home start for the Beach Bums.

- Jake Whitesides was given the day off but every other Beach Bums position player saw the field with Damon Lessler entering at second, Brad Roblin in center, and Eric Newton pinch hit
