Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums have signed left-handed pitcher Weston Curles, a true-rookie out of Mount Olive College in North Carolina. Curles will make his professional debut at Wuerfel Park tonight as the starting pitcher in the 7:05pm contest with the Midwest Sliders.
Curles was a member of the NCAA Division II National Champions at Mount Olive College. The Trojans finished 58-6. The Division II World Series was played at Gateway's GCS Ballpark. Curles posted a 6-0 record with a 2.77 ERA for the Trojans. He appeared in 13 games and made nine starts, throwing a total of 61.2 innings. He walked 21 and struck out 40.
"Curles is a polished left-handed starting pitcher that knows how to pitch," Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel said. "He comes from an outstanding program that turns out professional prospects on a yearly basis and we expect good things out of him."
Curles tossed a complete game in the semifinal of the 2008 NCAA South Atlantic Regional against the eighth ranked team in the nation, Columbus State. Hailing from Hertford, North Carolina, Curles was chosen to the Conference Carolinas All-Tournament team and also earned second team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.
Curles also won a championship in the Coastal Plains League during the summer of 2004. He was 5-0 for the Edenton Steamers with a 2.34 ERA and was an All-Star. During the 2004 season at Mount Olive, Curles finished 30th in the nation with a 2.36 ERA.
To make room for Curles, the Beach Bums released RHP James Ledford. Hailing from Buckley, Ledford had appeared in seven games out of the Beach Bums bullpen. He had no record and a 10.80 ERA in 6.2 innings. Ledford walked five and struck out five.
The Beach Bums (24-19) will host the Sliders tonight at Wuerfel Park in a 7:05 pm contest. Curles will make his professional debut against Midwest RHP Chris Rubio (0-1, 4.76) on the bump for his first start of the season.
