EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville made the most of four hits and edged the Rockford RiverHawks, 2-1, on Saturday.
The Otters, who have dropped 24 of 35 games since a 9-0 start to the season, snapped a five-game losing streak.
Evansville scored both its runs in the fifth inning. Tom Pennino walked and later scored on an error by shortstop Jono Brooks. Ryan Bethel made it 2-0 on a RBI groundout to short.
Evansville starter Mike Damchuk (1-0) struck out 10 without a walk over 6 2/3 shutout innings.
The RiverHawks totaled 10 hits, but left nine on base. They broke the shutout on a RBI single by Robert Sabates in the eighth inning.
Evansville closer Jon Lewis pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his ninth save.
Rockford starter Peden Rucker (0-1) struck out seven and walked two in 7 2/3 innings, but took the loss.
The rubber match of the three-game series is at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. The RiverHawks, on a nine-game trip, do not play a home game until July 18, when River City visits at 7:05 p.m. FatWallet.com and WIFR sponsor the Friday Night Fireworks Series.
