
Beach Bums Score First Victory Over Southern Illinois

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums picked up their first win over the Southern Illinois Miners, holding off the second place team in the West by a 7-3 margin at Wuerfel Park on Thursday night.
Bryan Rembisz made his first professional start for the Beach Bums following 12 appearances out of the bullpen. Southern Illinois scored off of Rembisz in the top of the first inning, receiving a two-out RBI single by Willie Keene to take the early 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Beach Bums scored twice in the bottom of the second. With two away Southern Illinois starter Griffin Bailey ran into difficulty. Zack Kalter singled and Jeff Brown delivered a broken bat infield single on the first pitch. Kalter moved to third on a throwing error by Ralph Santana. Jeff Brown stole second and Matt Rademacher gave the Beach Bums the advantage with a two-run single down the left field line.
The Beach Bums extended the advantage to 5-1 with three third inning runs against Bailey all coming again with two outs. Curtis Ledbetter singled and Brad Vericker drew a walk in front of the hottest hitter in the Beach Bums lineup Aaron Garza. Garza drilled an offering right down the line in left and out of Wuerfel Park for a three-run homer to add to the lead. The homer was the second in as many nights for Garza and extended his season best hitting streak to nine games.
Southern Illinois plated two runs in the fourth to pull within 5-3 and chase Rembisz from the game. Rembisz pitched four innings and allowed eight hits while striking out three in his first start. The Beach Bums bullpen took over in the fifth and kept Southern Illinois at bay the remainder of the game, allowing just four hits.
The Beach Bums picked up single runs in the sixth and eighth to grab a 7-3 lead. Zack Kalter doubled in a run in the eighth while helping a run score in the sixth by getting caught in a rundown.
Jeremy Dow made his Beach Bums debut out of the bullpen and earned the win following two innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Brett Bostelman threw a scoreless inning as did Nick Pepper. Jared Locke started the ninth and retired the first two batters before loading the bases. Tyler Meigs entered and struck out Willie Keene, who was representing the tying run, to end the game.
Traverse City toaled 11 hits in the game. Zack Kalter finished 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI and was tabbed as the Player of the Game. Brad VEricker finished with a pair of hits and scored three runs while Jeff Brown broke out of a slump with two hits as well.
The Beach Bums will meet Southern Illinois at Wuerfel Park again tomorrow night. The 7:05 pm contest will be another FANtastic Fireworks Friday and a Hawaiian Night. LHP Ryan Gehring (4-7, 3.81) gets the ball for the Beach Bums while Southern Illinois places RHP Nick Tisone (6-2, 3.54), who took a perfect game into the eighth against the Beach Bums on Sunday, on the hill. Tim Calderwood will broadcast the game on The Fox FM beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
