Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Traverse City Beach Bums matched a pair of franchise records on Saturday night, but fell to the Washington Wild Things in the finale of a six-game roadtrip by a 13-9 score.
Traverse City scored in the second and third innings to open a 2-0 lead. Mike Victor homered with one out in the second on a 3-2 offering from Washington starter Jason Neitz. In the third inning Robby Alcombrack and Brad Miller singled to begin the frame. Corey Whiting sacrificed the runners to second and third and James Guerrero drove in his first run of the season with a single to left.
Washington took the lead by scoring six times in the bottom of the third inning to chase starter Jason Kiley from the game after just 2.2 innings. Kiley was hit with the loss after allowing six runs on four hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout. The Wild Things took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen in the frame. Brett Grandstrand doubled home two runs and Phil Laurent, Jacob Dempsey, and Chris Sidick also drove in runs.
John Alonso thought he had his third homer of the season leading off the fourth, but ended up at second with a double. Brian Lapin singled with one away to place runners at the corners and Kyle Maunus dropped a base hit into right to pull Traverse City within 6-3. Again, Washington followed with a big inning in the bottom of the frame. The Wild Things scored four times against Kyle Touchatt to open a 10-3 lead. Phil Laurent doubled in two while Jacob Dempsey and Brett Grandstrand also drove in runs.
Mike Victor hit his second homer of the game in the sixth with one out on a 1-0 pitch from Neitz to pull Traverse City within 10-4 before Washington added two more in the bottom of the inning. Brad Miller led off the seventh inning with his third homer of the season, and the Beach Bums were finally able to chase Neitz from the contest by loading the bases. Corey Whiting walked, Mike Epping singled, and John Alonso walked to load the bases. Mike Victor drew a bases loaded walk to get within 12-6.
Another Washington run in the bottom of the frame made it a 13-6 edge, but the Beach Bums scored three in the eighth to get within striking distance. Robby Alcombrack led off the eighth with a solo homer to left, his second of the season. The homer was the fourth of the game for the Beach Bums, matching a record set on August 21, 2006 at River City. Corey Whiting reached on an error, James Guerrero doubled, and two runs scored on a single by Mike Epping although one was on an error.
The Beach Bums matched their season high total with 14 hits. All but one member of the order recorded a hit, but every player reached base at least once. James Guerrero, Mike Epping, Mike Victor, Brian Lapin, Robby Alcombrack, and Brad Miller each had two hits in the contest. Mike Victor drove in three runs in the game.
The Beach Bums return home tomorrow to open a six-game homestand against the Florence Freedom. RHP David Nathanson (1-4, 4.75) takes to the hill for the Beach Bums while Florence will counter with RHP Everett Saul (3-1, 6.25). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm on a Family Night at Wuerfel Park.
