Beach Bums Fall to Kalamazoo in 2008 Finale

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums concluded the 2008 season with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Kalamazoo Kings on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park.

Traverse City opened the scoring in the fourth inning against Kalamazoo starter Bernard Robert. Zack Kalter doubled with one out and scored on a base hit off the bat of Brad Miller. The Kings tied it against Steve Roberts in the fifth inning when Brandon Anderson scored on a sacrifice fly.

Kalamazoo took their first lead with a three-run sixth. Joe Frazee hit his first homer of the season to also score Kyle Kmiecik who had walked. Joe Ramos drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

The Beach Bums didn't go down without a fight, scoring in the seventh and eighth and putting the tying run on in the ninth. Jeff Brown led off the seventh with the first triple of his professional career and scored on an RBI groundout by Brad Roblin. In the eighth Steve Young singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Zack Kalter. Reed Welker led off the ninth with a single but did not advance as Brandon Parillo, the Frontier League post-season All-Star Reliever, tallied his 20th save.

Zack Kalter and Brad Miller finished with a pair of hits as the Beach Bums outhit Kalamazoo 8-6. Steve Roberts threw 4.1 innings in his final start and did not factor in the decision after allowing one run while walking five and striking out six. Matt Trausch took the loss in relief.

The Beach Bums concluded their second season under Manager Jon Cahill with a 50-46 record, just outside of the Frontier League playoff race. Cahill is the winningest manager in franchise history.
