Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Traverse City Beach Bums were defeated by the Lake Erie Crushers 4-1 on Sunday night in Ohio.
Following an emotional top of the first, Lake Erie plated an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to take a 1-0 lead. Jodem Rivera led off with an infield single moved to second when Drew Saylor reached on an error. Rivera then scored on a throwing error as the Beach Bums attempted to complete a double play.
The Beach Bums tied the game in the top of the third. With one away Mike Epping doubled down the line in right. Al Barbato followed by belting a 1-2 pitch from Lake Erie starter Paul Fagan deep to right. Barbato circled the bases, thinking he hit a two-run homer, but it was ruled to be a ground-rule double, scoring just Epping to tie the game. Barbato was stranded at second.
The contest remained in a 1-1 deadlock with Fagan battling Beach Bums starter David Nathanson until the bottom of the sixth when Lake Erie took the lead with three runs to account for the difference. Andrew Davis tripled with one away and scored on an RBI groundout by Gordie Gronkowski. Tim Binkoski doubled in a run and Wayne Bond also doubled home a run in the frame. Fagan tallied his sixth win to tie him for the league lead by pitching six innings and striking out nine. Jacinto Gonell notched his second save in as many nights by getting the last four outs. He has six saves on the season.
David Nathanson suffered the loss for the Beach Bums. Nathanson threw six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits to go with two walks and four strikeouts. Offensively, Al Barbato and Andrew Stafford each had a pair of hits including doubles.
The series concludes tomorrow night with a 7:05pm game. RHP Brett Bostelman (5-0, 1.55) gets the ball for Traverse City with RHP Josh Faiola (1-4, 7.56) scheduled to start for Lake Erie. The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM beginning with the Labatt Blue On Deck Sho at 6:45pm.
