Beach Bums Drop Series Opener

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums suffered a 7-1 loss in the opener of a series with the Lake Erie Crushers on Men's Night at Wuerfel Park on Wednesday.

Lake Erie exploded out of the gates, opening a 5-0 lead in the first three innings of the contest against Traverse City starter Kevin Reese. The Crushers grabbed a 2-0 lead on a two-run triple by Arden McWilliams in the first. Lake Erie added an unearned run in the second when Wayne Bond scored on a double by Jodem Rivera. Tyler Johnson's second homerun of the season, a two-run third inning shot, extended the lead to 5-0.

Kevin Reese settled down, working into the ninth inning as he faced the minimum over his final five innings of work. Lake Erie tacked on two more in the ninth inning on a two-run opposite field single by Kylee Hash to pad the lead to 7-0. Reese took the loss but walked one and struck out five in his 8.1 innings of work.

Brent Lysander of Lake Erie was also on cruise control. Lysander tossed the first complete game of his career in taking a shutout into the ninth inning. He struck out four in the game. The Beach Bums broke up the shutout when Andrew Stafford capped a nine-pitch at bat with a single to right that scored Al Barbato, who walked to begin the frame.

Mike Epping reached base three times in the contest with a double, a single, and a hit by pitch. Andrew Barbaro reached twice, drawing a walk and also being hit by a pitch.

The Beach Bums will continue the series with the Crushers tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park in a 7:05 pm affair. It will be Ladies Night at the park. All-Star RHP Brett Bostelman (5-4, 3.72) starts for the Beach Bums while RHP Alberto Rolon (0-0, 4.15) will make his first start for Lake Erie.
