Bowie, MD - Bowie scored seven unanswered runs after surrendering a first inning run to defeat the Akron Aeros 7-1 in the opening game of a three-game series Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium.

Akron (50-38) continues to reel just before the Eastern League All-Star break, as the Aeros have dropped nine of their last 12 games. Bowie (43-44) remained tied for third place in the Western Division of the Eastern League with the win.

The Aeros out-hit the Baysox 13-9, yet were unable to translate baserunners into runs, as they left 12 runners on base. Bowie starter Eddie Gamboa (3-1) allowed 11 hits but only surrendered the one run in five innings of work. Akron started Steven Wright (6-6) was done in by his knuckleball tonight, as he walked seven batters and allowed five earned runs, including one home run.

The Baysox, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, channeled the strategy of Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver by generating most of their offense via the big inning. Bowie scored multiple runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings and received a great deal of help from rehabbing Orioles Nick Markakis and Taylor Teagarden. Markakis finished the night 2 for 3 with a walk, but provided two home runs in the third and seventh innings, driving in four of Bowie's seven runs. Teagarden reached base three times in four plate appearances.

After Tyler Holt led off the game with a single, the Aeros center fielder came around to score on a Nick Weglarz RBI groundout. From there, Akron was repeatedly stymied throughout the game. The Baysox answered the Aeros by taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning on the strength of Markakis's first home run of the game. Bowie got three more runs in the fifth inning from a two-run single off the bat of June's Eastern League Player of the Month Robbie Widlansky to take a 5-1 advantage. Bowie added two more runs in the seventh on Markakis's second two-run home run of the game.

Michael Belfiore, Robert Hinton, and Clay Schrader relieved Gamboa and worked four shutout innings. The Baysox relievers did not surrender a run and allowed just two hits combined while striking out a total of three batters. After Wright went 4 2/3 innings, Tyler Sturdevant came on and was also victimized by the right fielder Markakis, surrendering two runs on three hits. Toru Murata came on after Sturdevant and pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball allowing two hits while striking out two.

The top of the Akron lineup all recorded multi-hit nights as Holt, Matt Lawson, and Chun Chen all raised their averages to .308, .329, and .317 respectively. Juan Diaz and Jordan Henry also contributed multiple hits to the Akron hit parade but the only RBI came off the bat of the left fielder Weglarz.

The Aeros will continue their three-game set at Bowie on Sunday night at 6:05. RHP Brett Brach (3-4, 4.42) will start for the Aeros, while RHP Tim Bascom (4-5, 4.17) will take the mound for the Baysox.. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
