Game #86 - Saturday, July 7, 2012
Peoples Natural Gas Field - Altoona, PA - 7:00 PM
LAST GAME: Buoyed by a 13-hit attack, Mark Cohoon navigated through seven innings to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Richmond Flying Squirrels by an 8-4 score last night at The Diamond in Virginia. Cohoon allowed a lead off home run to Gary Brown but finished his night with six shutout innings, retiring 13 of the final 15 Flying Squirrels he faced. The B-Mets chased Richmond starter Mike Kickham from the game in a four-run sixth inning. Wilmer Flores homered in the seventh and Binghamton added three more in the eighth. Ryan Fraser allowed a run in the eighth inning and loaded the bases in the ninth before Robert Carson entered. The lefty allowed two inherited runners to score but struck out Juan Perez, representing the tying run, to end the game.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-2, 6.35) makes his fourth start as a B-Met looking to snap a two-game losing skid. The righty from Evans City, PA allowed six runs on nine hits over four innings in a loss to the Altoona Curve in his most recent start on July 1. After throwing a complete-game against the Akron Aeros in his Double-A debut on June 20, Mazzoni lost a pair of starts at NYSEG Stadium, allowing an opponents' batting average of .413. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State, Mazzoni started his season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A), going 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts in the Florida State League.
RHP Kyle McPherson (1-2, 4.76) makes his fourth start of the season for the Curve and his second against the Binghamton Mets. He has not pitched since losing to the Harrisburg Senators on June 27. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings. The righty sat out the first two months with shoulder inflammation. McPherson split his season last year between Bradenton (High-A) and Altoona, combining for a 12-6 record and compiling a 2.96 ERA en route to earning the Pittsburgh Pirates 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year award. McPherson was selected in the 14th round of the 2007 draft out of the University of Mobile.
SNAPPING OUT OF IT: B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon earned his first win since May 27. He went winless in five starts, including two games with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA). The B-Mets had gone just 1-7 in the last eight games he started before earning the win last night against the Flying Squirrels.
OFFENSE ROLLING IN RICHMOND: The B-Mets racked up ten hits or more in all three games during their visit to The Diamond, averaging twelve per contest.
HOT IN RBI SITUATIONS: In the final two games of their series in Richmond, the B-Mets combined to go 11-for-25 with runners in scoring position. Binghamton drove in five runs in their final two games with two outs.
ROAD WARRIORS: After taking two of three from Richmond, the B-Mets have won seven of their last nine road games. Binghamton has gone 23-21 away from home this season. They are just 16-25 at home and have lost nine of their last ten.
PEOPLES NATURAL GAS FIELD: The B-Mets make their only visit of 2012 to the newly renamed home of the Curve. They went 1-2 here last season.
AGAINST THE CURVE: The B-Mets make their only visit to Altoona, PA this season. The Curve made two successful trips to the Southern Tier, taking five of seven games. Altoona hit .316 and slugged nine home runs during the meetings. The B-Mets pitching staff compiled a 5.43 ERA.
SAVING THE POWER FOR BINGHAMTON: In seven games against the B-Mets this season, the Curve have hit nine of their 46 team home runs. Stefan Welchleads the charge with three round-trippers.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their final series before the All-Star Break tomorrow night at 6:00 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen takes the ball for Binghamton against RHP Brandon Cumpton.
