Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

ALTOONA, PA - Cory Mazzoni fired a career-high seven shutout innings and the Binghamton Mets defeated the Altoona Curve 8-2 in the series opener at Peoples Natural Gas Field on Saturday night. It was the third straight game in which a B-Mets starter threw at least seven innings while allowing no more than one run.

The contest was initially delayed by an hour, forty-two minutes due to a power failure caused by a thunderstorm prior to the game. The holdup had no effect on the B-Mets offense that backed Mazzoni with a 4-for-9 performance with runners in scoring position and six runs scored with two outs.

Entering the game on a two-game losing streak, Mazzoni righted the ship against the Curve. Pitching just 120 miles from his hometown of Evans City, PA, he allowed a season-low three hits and set a season-high with six strikeouts. No Curve player reached third base under his watch.

After being held hitless through four innings, the B-Mets started their charge against Altoona starter Kyle McPherson in the fifth. Jefry Marte reached on a booted groundball at short by Brock Holt and Dustin Martin followed by lacing a double down the right field line. With two aboard, Sean Kazmar broke the scoreless game by dumping a two-run double to left. Juan Lagares capped the inning with a two-out RBI single.

Binghamton doubled their lead in the sixth. After Allan Dykstra shot a single to left and Marte flied out to right, McPherson was replaced by Mike Colla. Martin greeted the reliever with a single to right and Francisco Pena squeaked a three-run homer over the left field fence, his second as a B-Met.

Mazzoni capped his night by working around a leadoff single in a scoreless seventh inning. The Curve were thrilled to dip into the B-Mets bullpen and jumped on Edgar Ramirez in the eighth.

Quincy Latimore doubled and scored on a single by Jeremy Farrell. Ramirez's night came to a close after he loaded the bases on two walks. For the second straight night Robert Carson entered with the bases loaded and no outs. After Oscar Tejeda cut the deficit to four with a sac fly, Carson retired the next two hitters to end the threat.

Binghamton continued their solid two-out hitting in the ninth against reliever Jeff Inman. With two gone and the bases loaded, Eric Campbell smacked a two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to six.

Carson came back for the ninth and worked around a leadoff single to post a scoreless frame, striking out the final three batters he faced. The southpaw fanned four in his two innings of work.

Mazzoni (2-2) continued his solid pitching on the road this season in the winning effort. He has allowed just one unearned run in 14 innings away from home. McPherson (1-3) suffered the loss.

The B-Mets (40-46) will look to extend their road winning streak to a season-best four games Sunday night at 6:00 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen takes the hill for Binghamton against RHP Brandon Cumpton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
