Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Francisco Pena hit a three-run homer to break open a tight series opener, and the Binghamton Mets held off the Curve in the first of three for an 8-2 Saturday night win at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The Mets did all their damage in the middle of this one with a pair of three-run innings. Binghamton opened the scoring in the fifth, getting things started when Jefry Marte reached on an error to open the frame. Dustin Martin followed with a double to put runners at second and third, and two batters later, Sean Kazmar doubled the pair home, scoring himself later on a Juan Lagares two-bagger to make it a 3-0 B-Mets lead.

The sixth didn't appear to be a treacherous inning when Curve starter Kyle McPherson left it with just one Met on at first and two outs. Binghamton, though, immediately got a single from Martin and a three-run homer from Francisco Pena to greet Curve reliever Mike Colla, however, and blow the game open. McPherson (1-3) was charged with two earned runs of four total on four hits over his 5.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

The Curve finally put themselves on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Quincy Latimore cranked a leadoff double and scored one wild pitch and one batter later on Jeremy Farrell's RBI single. Farrell came home, as well, on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, but the Curve couldn't push anything more across, leaving two aboard. Binghamton regained the two tallies in the top of the ninth for the game's final line.

The Curve did get a bit of exciting news on Saturday night as Altoona alum and Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was added to the National League squad for the 2012 MLB All-Star Home Run Derby. There, he will oppose fellow former Curve outfielder Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays and American League mashers in a battle for power supremacy.

As they did against Reading three days ago, the Curve will seek to even this series in the middle game on Sunday. Altoona is set to send right-hander and All-Star Brandon Cumpton (8-6, 3.13) against Binghamton righty Gonzalez Germen (4-6, 4.03) with first pitch set for 6 p.m. For tickets and more information on the current Curve homestand, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
