Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Luke Murton homered and drove in three runs and the Trenton bullpen held off a late Portland rally for a 4-3 win over the Sea Dogs in front of 5,308 fans at Waterfront Park in a game that was twice delayed by rain. Murton captured the league-lead by himself in long balls with 18 for the Thunder (50-37), who matched a season-high by moving 13 games above the .500 mark.
With the score tied at 1 entering the bottom of the fourth, Almonte led off the inning against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt (2-3) with a line drive over the right field fence for his ninth home run of the season giving Trenton the lead for good. After Melky Mesa followed with a single, Murton blasted a ball off the foul pole in left for a two-run shot that made the score 4-1.
Brett Marshall, limited by a pitch count because of his upcoming All-Star game appearance, pitched four innings and allowed one run on five hits. All-Star Kelvin Perez (3-1) retired all six he faced in two relief innings and was credited with the victory. Jon Meloan allowed a run in the ninth on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s two-out double, but Meloan struck out Jeremy Hazelbaker with the tying run at second to end the win.
Murton collected three of Trenton's 11 hits and drove in three of the four runs. Bradley Jr. had three hits for the Sea Dogs including a pair of doubles.
The Thunder and Sea Dogs continue the three-game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm. Thunder left-hander Shaeffer Hall (7-6, 3.79) is slated to start against a starter still to be determined for Portland.
