Chesapeake Baysox News Release
ERIE, Penn. - Center fielder Dave Krynzel paced the Baysox with three hits, but it was not enough as Erie scored two in the seventh and held on for the 4-3 win. Right-hander Sean Gleason took the loss for the Baysox, dropping his record to 0-3 on the season.
Erie struck first against Gleason in second inning. SeaWolves first baseman Ryan Strieby led off the inning with his league leading eighth home run of the season. They looked to tack on another run with two outs as Joe Tucker attempted to score from second on a single by Shawn Roof. Instead, right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion fired a strike to the plate to nail Tucker and keep the Erie lead at one.
The Seawolves tacked on a run in the fourth, as Strieby tagged a Gleason offering deep into center field for a ground rule double to lead off the inning. One batter later, Alex Avila hit a double of his own to score Strieby and double the Erie lead.
Back came the Baysox in the top half of the fifth, led by left fielder Jonathan Tucker who doubled to leadoff the inning. Tucker moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Guillermo Rodriguez, and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Erie starter Brooks Brown.
Tucker again found himself at the heart of a two out rally in the seventh as the Baysox looked to get back to even. The left fielder singled to center, and scored from first when Rodriguez doubled to right to tie the game at two apiece. Tucker finished the night 2-4, raising his average on the season to .244.
Erie answered back in the bottom of the inning, as Gleason retired the first hitter he faced before giving up a single to Roof and an RBI double to Scott Sizemore. Fredy Deza came on for Gleason, and Brennan Boesch greeted him with an RBI single to right to make the score 4-2. Gleason finished the night working 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one.
The Baysox once again looked for some late inning magic off Erie reliever Josh Rainwater. With third baseman Melvin Dorta on second and two out, first baseman Brandon Snyder laced an RBI double to center field, cutting the deficit in half and bringing the go ahead run to the plate in the form of Concepcion. Rainwater answered the challenge by getting Concepcion to strike out looking, and came back on in the ninth to retire the Baysox in order to earn his first save of the season.
The loss drops the Baysox to 11-14 on the season, 8.0 games behind division leading Akron. Erie climbs to within 4.0 games of the Aeros, taking over sole possession of second place in the division with a record of 15-10.
The two teams go at it again tomorrow as RHP John Mariotti makes his Baysox debut against SeaWolves RHP Luis Marte (2-2, 2.92 ERA). Game time is set for 1:05 p.m.
