Sea Dogs Host 9th Annual Mother's Day 5K

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Track Club, Paradigm Window Solutions, Peak Performance, Key Bank, and Generations will be hosting the ninth annual Mother's Day 5k Road Race on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10th, 2009. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine Breast Cancer Research. There will also be a Kid's Run beginning at 8:30am that is free of charge.

The Portland Sea Dogs Mother's Day 5K is the largest 5K road race in the State of Maine. It is also the second largest road race in the state, only the Beach to Beacon is larger. From just over 300 runners in 2001 to 1,900 runners last year. A field of 2,000 plus is expected for the ninth running of the event.

Slugger and his Mom lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates with a unique finish inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout. The course is USAT&F certified and is part of the USAT&F Sanctioned Grand Prix series.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2008 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2009 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game. The first 1,000 registrants receive t-shirts and Mother's will receive carnations at the finish line.

The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. Registration is $18.00. The kid's race is free. The Sea Dogs are still accepting registrations for the race. If you would like to run in the ninth annual Sea Dogs' Mother's Day 5K you may register at Peak Performance on Marginal Way in Portland between 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM on Friday, May 8th or between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 9th. Additionally, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at Peak Performance or Hadlock Field during the same hours as above.

Road Closures

Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM on Sunday, May 10th.

New in 2009 Father's Day 5K

With the success of the Mother's Day 5K, the Sea Dogs have added a Father's Day 5K scheduled for Sunday, June 21st. Proceeds from the Father's Day 5K will benefit Prostate Cancer Research. The Portland Sea Dogs begin a three game homestand against the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins) on Friday, May 8th at Hadlock Field at 7:00 PM.
