Baysox Blow Three Run Lead Against Erie

Erie, Pa. - The Baysox built a three run lead early in the game, but were unable to hold on to win the game as the SeaWolves scored five runs in the fifth and six innings to come back and win 5-3. The loss drops the Baysox back to .500 at 15-15.

For the second night in a row, Bowie's offense struggled to get hits against the SeaWolves. After managing six hits on Saturday, the Baysox offense came through with only five on Sunday, which they converted into three runs. The loss marks the fifth time the Baysox have lost a game after leading.

After falling behind early to the SeaWolves on Saturday, the Baysox struck first on Sunday. Left fielder Kyle Hudson hit a ground ball double to left field to lead off the third inning and a ground out by catcher Adam Donachie moved Hudson to third. Center fielder Xavier Avery reached first on a fielder's choice when Hudson was thrown out at home plate by shortstop Audy Ciriaco. With second baseman Greg Miclat batting, Avery stole his 16th base of the season and scored when Miclat reached second on a fielding error by left fielder Justin Henry. The run put the Baysox up 1-0.

The Baysox added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Designated hitter Steve Lerud singled to right field and after right fielder Ronnie Welty and shortstop Pedro Florimon were retired, third baseman Carlos Rojas and Hudson walked to load the bases. Donachie followed with a single to right field that scored Lerud and Rojas and moved Hudson to third. That was the end of the day for Erie starting pitcher Luke Putkonen who was replaced by Austin Wood, who forced Avery to ground out to end the inning.

The SeaWolves stormed back to grab the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. After pitching four scoreless innings, right handed starting pitcher Steve Johnson got into trouble after issuing a leadoff walk to Henry. John Murrian hit an RBI double to left field to score Henry and was moved to third on a bunt single by Jamie Johnson. After Brandon Douglas popped out, Ben Guez hit a three run home run, his second in as many days, to put Erie up 4-3.

Erie added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead. Michael Bertram hit a lead off single to center field but was caught stealing second with Francisco Martinez batting. Martinez then hit a solo home run on a fly ball to left field to put the SeaWolves up 5-3.

Johnson pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out seven. Right-handed relief pitcher Raul Rivero entered for Johnson in the seventh inning and threw two scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out one while not allowing any hits.

In the last two games of the series, the Baysox offense went a combined 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. At times this season, the Baysox have struggled with clutch hitting, and at other times, have come through with big hits. In the first game of the series, The Baysox used a seven run seventh inning come back and beat the SeaWolves.

The one bright spot for the Baysox offense in Sunday's loss was Donachie. Playing in just his second game of the season, Donachie drove in two of the three runs the Baysox scored on a single in the fourth inning
