Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Binghamton's pitchers limited New Hampshire to just two runs over 16 innings of baseball Sunday evening to provide a split in the doubleheader. The B-Mets fired a 4-0 shutout in the lidlifter before falling 2-1 in nine innings in the nightcap at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Binghamton (11-16) twirled its third shutout of the season to take the first game of the twin bill. Dylan Owen held the Fisher Cats in check over five innings for his first win with the B-Mets in 2011. He allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three in combining on a six-hit shutout with fellow right-hander Ricky Brooks. Brooks fired the final two innings of the seven-inning contest to secure the win.
The B-Mets struck for half of its four runs in the third inning. After Yohan Pino got the first two outs of the frame, Jordany Valdespin reached on a single to right. Josh Satin followed with instant offense. The first baseman slugged a first-pitch fastball from Pino over the wall in left for his third home run of the season, which gave Binghamton an early 2-0 lead.
Pino exited to the loss after five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and struck out a season-high seven. Ronald Uviedo relieved Pino in the sixth and could not find the plate. He allowed four straight hitters to reach with one out. Satin and Brahiam Maldonado singled and then Uviedo walked Eric Campbell to load the bases. Allan Dykstra was not forced to swing the bat either and took a bases-loaded free pass to force in Binghamton's third run. The B-Mets final run came courtesy of a Raul Reyes infield single, which scored Maldonado to make it 4-0.
Satin carded a 2-for-4 showing with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI to pace Binghamton's offense. Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits in three trips for the Fisher Cats.
New Hampshire responded with a marathon win in the nightcap. With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, the Fisher Cats loaded the bases on Eric Niesen thanks to a single, a hit by pitch and an intentional walk. Moises Sierra provided the difference-maker with a walk-off, infield RBI single which scored Anthony Gose to seal the 2-1 victory. The loss for Niesen's fourth.
Edgar Ramirez started the game and offered his longest outing of the season. The hurler tossed four innings and limited the Fisher Cats to a run on four hits. The lone run came courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Mike McDade in the third.
The B-Mets lone run off Game 2 starter Rey Gonzalez scored in the first inning. Maldonado laced a two-out RBI double to left, which scored Mike Fisher to give Binghamton the early 1-0 lead. Maldonado finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of walks to raise his average over the .200 mark for the first time since Opening Day.
Gonzalez output his fifth straight quality start. He allowed a run on four hits over six innings.
Roy Merritt hurled a season-best 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief following Ramirez and Erik Turgeon offered 1 1/3 innings of solid relief as well before Niesen suffered the loss.
The doubleheader split precipitated a split of the four-game series for the two teams, who will meet again in New Hampshire May 17-19.
Binghamton returns home for a brief, three-game home stand with the New Britain Rock Cats Monday at 6:35 PM. LHP Robert Carson (1-3, 3.60) will make his sixth start of the year opposite RHP Brett Jacobson (1-0, 3.00) of New Britain. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
